There’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of hanging a beautifully framed picture or piece of artwork in your home. Whether it’s a family photo, a piece of fine art, or a treasured sports shirt, displaying it properly makes all the difference. At Yorks Framing, we believe presentation is as important as the framing itself, and a well-positioned frame can completely transform a room.
Hanging framed pieces might seem simple, but getting the placement, height, and alignment just right takes a bit of planning. A professional framing job deserves a professional display – and with a few easy steps, you can make sure your artwork, photos, or memorabilia look their best for years to come.

Choose A Location And Height
Before reaching for your tools, think carefully about where your framed piece will look its best. The location sets the tone for the display – whether that’s a living room feature wall, a hallway gallery, or an office statement piece. Lighting plays a huge role, too. Try to position your frame away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, especially if it contains photographs or original artwork.
As a general rule, aim for the centre of your picture to be around eye level, typically between 145 and 155 cm from the floor. For grouped pieces, balance is key: align frames by their centres rather than their tops or bottoms. At Yorks Framing, we often advise customers on display layouts, helping you create arrangements that feel natural and cohesive.
Measure And Mark The Wall
Once you’ve chosen your location, grab a tape measure, pencil, and spirit level. Accuracy is everything here – a few millimetres out can make a big difference when you stand back to admire your work. Measure the width of your wall and mark the centre point where the frame will sit. If you’re hanging multiple pieces, map out the spacing between each one before you start drilling or hammering.
If your picture uses a hanging cord or wire, measure the distance from the top of the frame to where the cord sits when pulled tight. This measurement determines where you’ll place your fixing on the wall. Taking a few extra minutes to double-check your marks will save you the frustration of redoing holes later. At Yorks Framing, precision is something we live by – and a little patience during this step will ensure a perfect result.

Install The Hardware
The next step is choosing the right wall fixings. Lightweight frames can be supported with small hooks or nails, while heavier or large pieces may need more substantial fittings such as screws, wall plugs, or specialist picture hooks. For particularly valuable or oversized frames, use two hooks for extra stability and to keep the piece level.
If your walls are plasterboard, be sure to use suitable anchors to avoid sagging or damage. For brick or masonry, use wall plugs and screws designed for solid walls. Once installed, test each fixing to make sure it’s secure before hanging your frame. A little preparation now prevents any risk of your artwork slipping or falling later – something we always emphasise to our customers at Yorks Framing.
Hang And Adjust
Now comes the rewarding part – hanging your framed piece. Carefully lift it into position and rest the cord or hooks on the fittings. Stand back and take a good look from different angles to ensure it’s level and sits where you want it. If it’s slightly uneven, use a spirit level and adjust until it’s perfect.
For grouped or gallery-style displays, step back regularly to check that spacing remains consistent. A neat, balanced layout will make even a modest wall feel professionally styled. Once you’re happy with the arrangement, wipe away any pencil marks and give the glass a gentle polish. Your finished display should look effortless, polished, and secure – just as it did when it left Yorks Framing.
